MEDIATION EXPERIENCE

Ms. Barr is among the most respected neutrals in California and has been recognized by “Best Lawyers in America” as one of the top practitioners of Alternative Dispute Resolution.
Over the last decade, Ms. Barr has resolved over a thousand cases – many of them multi-party, bitterly-contested disputes – in a variety of areas including business, employment, real estate, environmental, and probate law. Ms. Barr’s success at settling cases attests to her skill at distilling complex issues, her decade-long litigation experience, and her ability to defuse the emotional issues that often underlie conflict.

In addition to mediating disputes, Ms. Barr facilitates large and small group dialogues in corporate and educational settings.
As an adjunct professor at the Straus Institute for Dispute Resolution at Pepperdine University School of Law, Ms. Barr teaches mediation skills to students, lawyers and judges. She is a frequent lecturer on mediation, negotiation and conflict resolution for law firms, businesses, insurance companies and educational institutions.

PROFESSIONAL LEGAL EXPERIENCE

Ms. Barr began practicing law 19 years ago as a litigator of complex civil cases. She was a named partner (under her maiden name, Oths) at Denney & Oths in Glendale, California where she focused on environmental, business and employment litigation. Prior to that, Ms. Barr was an associate at Glassman & Browning in Beverly Hills where she litigated in the areas of entertainment and First Amendment law. She has represented corporate and individual clients, as plaintiffs and defendants, in all stages of litigation including mediations, arbitrations, trials and appeals. Ms. Barr’s experience in litigating complex, multi-party lawsuits has been instrumental in her ability to resolve such cases as a mediator.

EDUCATION

Ms. Barr received a J.D. from Indiana University Law School in Bloomington and graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Indiana University. She has received mediation and negotiation training from many institutions including the Harvard Project on Negotiation, Straus Institute for Dispute Resolution at Pepperdine Law School, U.C.L.A., Los Angeles County Bar, Center for Conflict Resolution, the California Court of Appeal, and Concur.

ACHIEVEMENTS, AFFILIATIONS

Ms. Barr is an Adjunct Professor at the Straus Institute for Dispute Resolution of Pepperdine Law School (www.law.pepperdine.edu/straus), where she teaches mediation. She is a frequent lecturer on mediation and negotiation for state and local bar associations and for private law firms. She is a Fellow of the International Academy of Mediators (www.iamed.org), and a member of the California Academy of Distinguished Neutrals (www.californianeutrals.org).

Ms. Barr has served as chair of the ADR Committee of the Business Law Section of the California State Bar and as a board member for the Southern California Mediation Association.
