Alternative Dispute Resolution Experience

Since 1998 Justice Peterson has served as private and court appointed arbitrator and mediator. Cases arbitrated include medical and architect malpractice claims, injury claims arising from automobile accidents, products liability claims, putative class claims against a credit card issuer, real property disputes, inverse condemnation claims, contract disputes; including those between major health insurers and hospital groups, and disputes involving automobile dealerships, will contests, and Proposition 65 claims involving major oil companies, and public entities. Served as appointed hearing officer for the San Francisco Human Rights Commission, and as court designated mediator and Discovery Referee.

Professional Experience

Prior to service as a California jurist, pursued an active trial practice for about 30 years in state and federal courts as partner in the form of Kilpatrick & Peterson (formerly Kilpatrick, Peterson & Ely).

Practice included: eminent domain actions, medical and legal malpractice, regulatory disciplinary actions, product liability, personal injury, insurance coverage litigation, defamation, will contests and other probate matters, actions concerning sale and title to real property, planning, zoning and environmental matters, miscellaneous administrative matters before municipal and state agencies, family law, federal tort claims, defense of criminal cases, and partnership, corporate, contract and commercial litigation.

City Attorney for both general and special litigation purposes, represented public employees and other public entities as special litigation counsel, practiced before the Armed Services Board of Contract Appeals and U.S. Court of Claims, and was lead trial counsel in a class action venued in the Federal Court of Guam.
