Hon. Edward Huntington
After serving on the San Diego Superior Court Bench for more than 12
years Hon. Edward “Ned” Huntington retired and has continued working in
private dispute resolution.
Ned was in private law in practice starting in 1967, becoming Partner
with Huntington & Bryans, and later Huntington & Haviland. In the 1980’s
was named as one of The Best Lawyers in America. In 1993, he was
selected for Who’s Who in Executives and Professionals. Formerly a
Deputy City Attorney, he specialized in tax, family law and estate
planning matters, including all phases of litigation. He holds his B.S.
in accounting from San Diego State University, his J.D. from the
University of California, Hastings College of Law and his L.L.M. in
taxation from University of San Diego’s Graduate Tax Program. He is a
Fellow in the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers and was a Board
Certified Specialist in Family Law and also in Taxation.
Ned was appointed to the San Diego Superior Court bench in September
1995 and retired officially on April 4, 2008. Following an assignment to
Family Court, he did a two-year tour in Vista doing civil and criminal
trials as well as family law. His final assignment was to serve the
Independent Family Law Calendar.
Ned was President of the San Diego County Bar Association in 1988 and in
1994 served as Vice-President of the State Bar of California,
Chairperson of the State’s Discipline System, and as a member of the
Board of Trustees of the State Bar Foundation. In 1988-1989, he served
as a member of the Board of Trustees for the County Law Library. He was
a Founding Member as well as a Chairperson of the Certified Family Law
Specialists program as well as Family Law Editor of the San Diego Trial
Lawyer’s Magazine and Contributing Editor to Matthew Bender’s California
Family Law Monthly.
Judge Huntington has served multiple years on the CJER Faculty both for
the annual Judicial College and at the Family Law Institute. Ned has
given numerous lectures in family law for the State Bar, CEB, Rutter
Group, Trial Lawyers, Lawyer’s Club, Barristers, Bridging the Gap and
WSU School of Law. In addition he has done special tutoring for judges
new to family law in the application of technology to solving various
family issues in the courtroom.
At San Diego State University, he was Men’s Student Body President and
in Law school, he was Senior Class President. In 1968, he was named one
of San Diego’s Ten Outstanding Young Men. In 1995, he received the
County Bar’s annual award for Outstanding Services to the Legal
Profession. In December Judge Huntington was named Outstanding Jurist
for 2006 by the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers. In 2004 he was
named Outstanding Alumnus by the Hastings Law School Alumni Association.
He lives in South Mission Beach with his wife Terri. He has two grown
children, Jessica (UCLA & USD) and Adam (USC). He continues to be active
in Bench-Bar activities as well as boating, golf, surfing, skiing,
bicycling, Over-the-Line and computer technology. His personal website
